database

Is there anything more sexy to talk about than a database? Well, inside my geek circles, no, there isn't. But for almost everybody else, databases are an important piece of business, but usually never fully understood. I can start talking about databases and most people's eyes wander and they go to their happy place.

Databases are a necessity in today's business, but even for those who use them on a regular basis, it's easy to take them for granted. For a sophisticated web application, the database is its foundation. The database contains all of the information and the web application provides the means to access and manipulate it. That this information can be entered once and accessed simultaneously by many people makes for easy collaboration between people no matter where they are.

The whole database thing starting to get sexy now, right? No? Okay, I'll keep trying.

Consider the visitor's to your website. For a static site, people come and go, and aside from an occasional email and some muddled server statistics, you don't know if your website is effective. What if you could entice your visitors to register at your site; entice them with a special offer on your product, or a giveaway. Into the database goes your visitor's names and some information. Now those visitor's are no longer faceless. Add polls and surveys to find out what they want on your site. Into the database it goes, ready for your reports on how to maximize your website experience. Rotate information by the visitor, by the date; all without any intervention on your part.

This boring database is now providing you with ways you can improve your business. Now, that's sexy, huh?

While I am well-versed in website design and programming, my expertise doesn't stop there. I can show you how a database will maximize your customer's experience while streamlining your own business processes. Give me SQL 2000 on a Windows server or MySQL on a Linux server and I will show you how databases can make a website explode with interactivity. Flash is nice if you want to briefly dazzle someone, but if you really want to make an impact, let the database drive your site and your customers will be blown away.

That should say 'about me' How to get a hold of me, not the pilot's term
